More and more dog owners are opting for BARF – that is, biologically appropriate raw feeding. No wonder: fresh meat, vegetables, and natural supplements certainly sound healthier than dry food from a bag. But as healthy as the principle is, mistakes can easily creep in, which can lead to deficiencies or digestive problems in the long run.
In this post I'll show you the 5 most common BARF mistakes – and how you can easily avoid them.
Mistake 1: Incorrect nutrient ratio
One of the most common mistakes in BARF feeding is an imbalance of muscle meat, offal, bones, and plant matter. Many dog owners give too much meat and too few organ meats or calcium sources.
Tip:
Pay attention to the correct basic ratio (approx. 70–80% animal, 20–30% plant) and regularly incorporate liver, heart, tripe and raw, soft bones or eggshell powder.
Mistake 2: Lack of fiber and vitamins
Vegetables are not just "filler". They provide fiber, phytochemicals, and vitamins that support digestion. Many people forget that dogs cannot digest raw plants well.
Tip:
Finely purée the vegetables or lightly sauté them. This will help your dog absorb the nutrients more easily.
Mistake 3: No supplementation of trace elements
Zinc, iodine, manganese, or copper are often lacking in homemade BARF diets. Without targeted supplementation, deficiencies can develop, sometimes only becoming apparent after months.
Tip:
Use high-quality supplements (e.g., seaweed meal for iodine, liver for copper, brewer's yeast for B vitamins) – but please in the correct dosage!
Mistake 4: Too much fat or too lean
Fat is an important source of energy, but too much of it puts a strain on the liver and pancreas. Conversely, food that is too lean does not meet energy requirements.
Tip:
Adjust the fat content to your dog's activity level. An athletic dog can have a little more fat, a senior or overweight dog less.
Error 5: No individual customization
Every dog is different: age, weight, activity level, allergies, or illnesses all influence the optimal feeding plan. Many BARFers use standard tables – and are surprised when their dog isn't getting the best nutrition.
Tip:
An individual BARF plan saves you worries and your dog health problems.
