Valuable oils at a glance

Oils are far more than just a source of fat—they're packed with essential fatty acids, vitamins, and nutrients that are a valuable addition to the daily diet for both dogs and humans. However, not every oil is suitable for every dog—and not every oil serves the same purpose.

In this article, I will introduce you to various high-quality oils, explain their properties, and show you how you can integrate them sensibly and mindfully into your dog's diet.

Why add oil to food at all?

- Supply of essential fatty acids (e.g. Omega-3 & Omega-6)
- Support for skin, coat, immune system & cell protection
- Source of energy, especially for picky or underweight dogs
- Promotes nutrient absorption (especially fat-soluble vitamins)

The classic oils:

Salmon oil
- Rich in: Omega-3 (EPA & DHA)
- Effect: anti-inflammatory, good for skin & coat, supports the cardiovascular system
- Especially suitable for: allergy sufferers, dogs with skin problems or joint inflammation

linseed oil
- Rich in: Alpha-linolenic acid (plant-based source of Omega-3)
- Effect: Digestive, anti-inflammatory, regulates metabolism
- Tip: Always keep it fresh – linseed oil goes rancid quickly!

Sunflower oil
- Rich in: Omega-6 fatty acids & Vitamin E
- Effect: Supports cell regeneration, ideal for combination with Omega-3 rich oils
- Note: Only recommended in combination with Omega-3 sources

Beef or poultry fat (animal fat in oil form)
- Energy booster: Especially for active dogs or underweight dogs
- Effect: Quickly available energy, appetite stimulant
- Use sparingly: due to high energy density

Special oils with additional benefits:

Coconut oil
- Effect: supports the immune system, has an antimicrobial effect, helps with parasite defense
- Outside & inside: also suitable for skin care
- Pay attention to dosage: If you take too much – risk of diarrhea!

Hemp oil
- Rich in: balanced Omega 3-6 ratio
- Effect: Skin health, anti-inflammatory, calming in case of restlessness
- Particularly suitable for: older dogs or those prone to stress

Evening primrose oil / borage oil
- Rich in: gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)
- Effect: helpful for allergies, itching, dry skin
- Tip: Dosage only in consultation with a nutritionist

Tips for use & storage:

- Always use cold-pressed, natural oils
- Store in a cool, dark place – some oils (e.g. linseed oil) in the refrigerator
- Variety is useful – do not always use the same oil
- Small quantities & quality over quantity

High-quality oils are little powerhouses that not only enhance food but can also provide targeted support. Choose carefully—and above all, feed with sensitivity. Because every drop can also be a drop of love and mindfulness.
